El volcà Mauna Loa és un dels més actius a les Illes hawaianes i un dels cinc volcans que formen l'illa de Hawaii juntament amb Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Kohala i Kilauea.
En hawaià, Mauna Loa significa 'muntanya alta', nom bastant adequat, ja que és el volcà més gran de la Terra, amb un volum estimat aproximat de 75.000 km³ i una alçada de 5.000 m des de la seva base fins a la superfície de l'oceà, i altres 4.170 m sobre el nivell del mar, és a dir, més de 9.000 m d'altitud total. El Mauna Loa és uns 36 m més baix que el Mauna Kea. La xemeneia del volcà es diu Moku`aweoweo.
