I juli fejres der i PuertodeSantiago Festerne til ære for Vor Frue af Karmel, som, ligesom hvert år, tilbyder et bredt udvalg af aktiviteter for alle aldre. Programmet inkluderer fyrværkeri og bådprocessionen af Vor Frue som de mest karakteristiske elementer.
Bjerget Karmel i Det Hellige Land nævnes i Bibelen som stedet, hvor Elias kæmpede mod Baals profeter.
I det 12. århundrede lod eremitterne sig inspirere af profeten Elias' tro og etablerede sig på bjerget Karmel under Vor Frues beskyttelse. De lagde grunden til de senere ordener af karmelitter og karmelitter.
