Romerne havde i Rummen, ved bredden af Melsterbeek, opført nogle befæstede militære lejrpladser, hvorfra de regelmæssigt måtte kæmpe mod en opstandig og ellers overvundet gallisk stamme, kaldet Betasjerne: denne folksgruppe boede i området omkring de nuværende floder Demer, Velp, Grote Gete, Kleine Gete og Herk.
