Efter at Bernadette Soubirous havde set Maria dukke op i en grotte i Lourdes i 1858, blev sådanne Mariagrotter meget populære. Lourdesgrotten, med et rum til lys nederst og en niche med en Mariastatue øverst, er blevet genopbygget mange gange i miniatureudgave i Flandern. Den blev bygget i 1874 og er i dag et populært hvilested for vandrere og cyklister.
