Efter anden verdenskrig med industrialiseringen og intensiveringen af landbruget blev det for svært at slå og høste de enge i Demerdalen manuelt. Engelene blev tilruget, og som i mange dale blev de beplantet med canadiske popler for stadig at kunne give noget udbytte. De blomstrende enge og græsmarker forvandlede sig hurtigt til brændenælder og brombær.
