Siden 1930'erne har ideen om at lave en park af en åben plads mellem Kirkegade, Normand allé og Dunevejen levet. Det blev først realiseret i 1991.
Der var masser af idéer til dette stykke jord midt i turistområdet, såsom et nyt torv, udstykning med luksusvillaer, parkeringsplads, et plejehjem,… men man fandt aldrig enighed.
Endelig blev parkeringspladsen ved siden af parken anlagt i 1989. Selve parken åbner omkring påsken 1991, men fik aldrig nogen officiel åbningsceremoni på grund af interne, politiske stridigheder.
Den kommunale park er dagligt åben fra 9.00 til solnedgang.
