Den første omtale af begynnerne i Mechelen stammer fra 1209. Efter mange års bosættelse uden for bymurene, vender de i 1578 tilbage til indre by.

I 1629 blev den tidligere oprettede lille kapel erstattet af en kirke. For Begijnhofkirken (1629-1647) skabte Pieter Huyssens og Jacques Francart et typisk eksempel på barokarkitektur. Designet kombinerede italienske eksempler med en lokal formgivning, der ikke helt brød med fortiden. Efter 1640 stod Lucas Faydherbe, en elev af Rubens, formentlig for en del af interiørindretningen. Italienske indflydelser er tydelige gennem et rytme af rundbuede arkader båret af korintiske søjler samt en imposant kroneliste. Krydshvælvingerne refererer til den gotiske stil.
