Byen ligger i Jura-bjerget. Floden Sorne løber gennem byen, lige inden denne flod løber ud i Birs.
I 737 blev byen første gang nævnt i litteraturen, som i figo Delemonte, i 1139 som Telsperg, men også Laimunt og Deleymunt er gamle betegnelser. I 1289 fik byen byrettigheder. Siden 1947 har separatistiske kræfter fået overtaget i Delémont. Indtil da var størstedelen af kantonen Jura stadig en del af kantonen Bern. Fra 1. januar 1979 er byen hovedstad i den nydannede kanton Jura.
