Dietwil nævnes første gang i 1236 som Tuetwile. For at skelne det fra kommunen Grossdietwil i Luzern blev det også kaldt Kleindietwil eller Dietwil im Reusstal.
I begyndelsen af det 15. århundrede erhvervede Luzern von Moos-familien retten til lav retspleje i landsbyen, som de afhændede i 1422 til Luzern. Efter erobringen af Aargau i 1415 kom landsbyen under myndigheden af byen Luzern og var en del af Meienberg-distriktet. I 1798 blev Dietwils bånd til Luzern brudt. Med Mæglingens Act i 1803 blev det en del af den nydannede kanton Aargau. I 1863 naturaliserede en beslutning fra Aargaus kantonsråd alle de romaer, der var bosat i Dietwil efter at have flygtet fra Napoleons hære i Hviderusland.
