Byen Hinwil, som den senere kommune fik sit navn fra, nævnes første gang i 745 som Hunichinwilari i en donation givet af Beata og Landolt til Klosteret St. Gall. Hinwil var en del af en alemannisk koloni, der også omfattede nærliggende landsbyer og bosætninger, som blev doneret i det følgende århundrede af efterkommere af Beata og Landolt eller af andre medlemmer af deres klan til det samme kloster, såsom Hadaleihinchova, Pozinhova, Rimolteswilare og Werinholveshusa.
Alemannerne blev faktisk forudgået af romerske indbyggere, hvilket bekræftes af fundamentet til en romersk villa, der dateres fra det 1. århundrede e.Kr. og er blevet opdaget under den middelalderlige kirke i Hinwil, som første gang nævnes i anden halvdel af det 8. århundrede.
