Turistisk set er den høje fritids- og rekreative værdi af de to Ruhr-dæmninger, Hengstey- og Harkortsee, samt de skovklædte Ardey-højder blandt andet Bachviertel som en historisk gammel by med mange bindingsværkhuse og den daloverspændende, godt 30 m høje Ruhr-viadukt.
Herdecke ligger direkte ved Ruhr med sine to dæmpninger Hengsteysee og Harkortsee, Ruhr-dalen og Ardeypforte. Landskabeligt set tilhører Herdecke de nordvestlige udkantområder af Sauerland og regnes som en del af det niedersaksisk-mærkiske bakkeland. Herdecke ligger i en højde af 80 til 274 m over NHN.
