Aschebergs nabokommuner er Nordkirchen og Senden, den frie by Münster, Drensteinfurt, den frie by Hamm og Werne.
Stedet Ascheberg stammer fra en landsby af saksisk oprindelse, som opstod i midten af 800-tallet i nærheden af en ludgeriansk kirke. Navnet Ascheberg stammer højst sandsynligt fra Eschenburg, som engang skulle have ligget nær Ascheberg. Den første dokumenterede omtale af stedet stammer fra år 890. Landsbyens udseende domineres af den 81 meter høje, neogotiske tårn fra St. Lambertus-kirken. Det drejer sig om en gotisk hallkirke, hvis kor blev indrettet i 1740 af Johann Conrad Schlaun.
