Stedet Steinthaleben ligger ved Thallebener Bach, ved sydvestkanten af naturparken Kyffhäuser. Den samlede vestlige del af dette lille, skovklædte middelhøjeområde tilhører kommunen. Omkring 518 hektar syd og vest for byen anvendes landbrugsmæssigt. Den højeste hævning i Steinthalebens område er Kulpenberg med 473,4 m over havets overflade.
Omkring en kilometer syd for Steinthaleben ligger en tidligere grusgrav. Her er der opstået et lille biotop med mange frøer, fisk, insekter og fugle. Derudover har der udviklet sig en betydelig bestand af hønsetraner her.
