Fra navnets betydning antages oprindelsen at være i bosættelsen af en lokal stammeleder ved navn Alicho i det tidlige 12. århundrede, hvorfra den nuværende navn blev udviklet via „Alechingen“ og „Aelchingen“. Der er ingen forbindelse til dyret elg.
