Byen Gräfenhainichen ligger cirka 20 km sydvest for Wittenberg, sydøst for Dessau og nordøst for Bitterfeld i kanten af Dübener Heide.
I nærheden blev Gremminer See skabt i forbindelse med omdannelsen af den tidligere brunkulstortion Golpa-Nord, ved hvis bredder det industrielle monument Ferropolis ligger. I byens sydkant findes også Gröberner See, som også er opstået fra en tidligere grusgrave.
