Byen ligger i det midtsaksiske granitbjerge, lige ved Zwickauer Mulde, og er cirka 25 km fra Mittweida, omkring 25 km fra Chemnitz og cirka 65 km fra Leipzig.
Det sorbiske navn for stedet er Luncznaw, og det er den sydligste sorbiske bosættelse i den sorbiske lille region Rochelinzi. I 1170 blev der af tyske kolonister anlagt et reihendorf ved siden af den allerede eksisterende sorbiske landsby. Fem år senere blev Lunzenau nævnt som ejendom af ridderen Guntheros de Rohsberg. I 1209 blev Hohenkirchen nævnt som den ansvarlige menighed for Lunzenau. Lunzenau fik i 1333 byrettigheder. Seks år før skete den første omtale af Lunzenauer Muldenbrücke.
