Byen Velen ligger i det vestlige Münsterland i nordvestlige del af delstaten Nordrhein-Westfalen i kommunen Borken i regeringsdistriktet Münster. I 2003 modtog Velen titlen som officielt anerkendt ferieområde fra regeringspræsidenten i Münster. Siden den 23. august 2012 har Velen båret betegnelsen by Velen. Oprindeligt består den nuværende by Velen af sammenlægningen af kommunerne Ramsdorf og Velen.
