Sehlem ligger syd for Hildesheim, syd for Hildesheimer Wald og vest for bjergkæden Harplage.
Bynavnet kan spores tilbage til det 12. århundrede, men dets betydning er uklart. I begyndelsen af det 20. århundrede havde Sehlem 665 indbyggere og havde en betydelig teglværk. I den sydøstlige del af byen blev der oprettet et stoppested for Lammetal-banen, som blev færdig den 1. oktober 1902 fra Hildesheim til Bad Gandersheim, og som i 1950'erne blev flyttet ca. 600 m længere nordpå nær byens centrum.
