Byen Ahlen ligger i det vestfalske Münsterland nord for Nordrhein-Westfalen. Det er en mellemstor by med kommuneafhængighed og den største samt økonomisk betydningsfulde by i Warendorf-distriktet i Münster-regeringsområdet.
Byens navn nævnes første gang omkring år 850 i Vita Liudgeri II. Dets betydning og den med navnet relaterede fremstilling af byens våben med en "vinget ål" er ikke afklaret.
