Neuenhagen ligger på den østlige udkant af Berlin. Nabokommunerne er Hoppegarten, Altlandsberg, Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf og Schöneiche.
Neuenhagen blev grundlagt omkring 1230 under bosættelsen af Barnim som en tysk kolonist landsby. Den ældste bevarede bygning fra denne tid er den smalle tidlige gotiske landsbykirke bygget af marksten. I 1375 blev Neuenhagen første gang omtalt i skriftlige kilder som Nyenhove i landbogen for Mark Brandenburg.
