Kommunen var en del af Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Lichtetal am Rennsteig, indtil denne blev ophævet den 1. januar 2019, og Piesau blev en del af kommunen Neuhaus am Rennweg. På grund af denne overførsel blev stedet også overført fra Landkreis Saalfeld-Rudolstadt til Landkreis Sonneberg.
