Schmallenberg er en middelby i Hochsauerlandkreis. Med 303 kvadratkilometer er det den største by i Nordrhein-Westfalen både i areal og en af de største byer i Tyskland.
Handelsbyen ved Lenne var i middelalderen medlem af Hansestæderne. Det er velkendt, at der i kernbyen har været tekstilindustri siden det 15. århundrede. Fire hundrede år senere blev byen med produktionsfokus på strømpevarer centrum for Sauerland tekstilindustri. Dette gav Schmallenberg tilnavnet Strumpfstadt. I dag dominerer, udover tekstilindustrien, også mellemstore virksomheder primært inden for industri og håndværk. En vigtig betydning har også skov- og turismeindustrien på grund af den skov- og bjergfyldte beliggenhed.
