Hattingen er efter Witten den næststørste by i Ennepe-Ruhr-kredsen i Nordrhein-Westfalen. Den ligger i den sydlige del af Ruhr-området ved Ruhr-floden og grænser direkte op til storbyerne Wuppertal, Essen og Bochum.
Hattingen blev grundlagt på en flodterrasse ved Ruhr og har en velbevaret historisk kerne med mange bindingsværkshuse. Byens centrum har oplandet af en mellemstor by. Hattingen ligger i en højde af 60 til 306 m over NHN.
