Første gang nævnt bliver Binutloga ), stedet for den senere klostergrundlæggelse, i det Werdener bøger fra Benediktinerklosteret Werden fra år 890, som oplister de godser, der er skattepligtige til klosteret.
I det 11. århundrede nævnes stedet som Buntlagi, da jorden bliver givet til underhold af en egenkirke for det saksiske adelsfamilie Billunger, som på det tidspunkt ejede Buntilagi. En kapel viet til den hellige Gertrud med en lille kirkegård blev bygget, men kunne ikke etablere sig som en selvstændig sogn, da den fik nægtet tildelingen af landsbyer.
