Herzog August Bibliotek i Wolfenbüttel – også kendt under navnet Bibliotheca Augusta – er et internationalt anerkendt bibliotek. På grund af dens betydelige gamle samling fra middelalderen og den tidlige moderne tid er det et vigtigt forskningssted for kulturen fra denne periode. Forskningen understøttes af internationale stipendieprogrammer. Videnskabelige konferencer, kulturelle arrangementer og udstillinger af overregional betydning organiseres.
HAB er medlem af det arbejdsgemenskab, der består af seks tyske biblioteker, som danner et decentraliseret nationalbibliotek for Tyskland. Inden for rammerne af dette projekt er HAB ansvarlig for indsamlingen af tyske tryksager fra 1600-tallet. På grund af sin gamle samling var biblioteket også intensivt involveret i udarbejdelsen af de retrospektive nationalbibliografier VD 16 og VD 17.
