Eselsbækken udspringer i den nordvestlige Pfälzerwald ved den vestlige bygrænse af Enkenbach-Alsenborn på en højde af 304 m over NHN. Herfra strømmer bækken hovedsageligt mod vest og munder i nordvest for Kaiserslautern på 226 m til højre i Lauter.
Efter sin 12,3 km lange vej munder Eselsbækken 78 højdemetre dybere, hvilket svarer til et gennemsnitligt bundfald på 6,3 ‰. Den afvander et afvandingsområde på 27,888 km² gennem Lauter, Glan, Nahe og Rhinen til Nordsøen.
