Stationen Eschwege, i dag også kendt under betegnelsen bystation, blev første gang åbnet i 1875 vest for centrum af den lige så navngivne by og – efter at driften i mellemtiden var blevet indstillet – igen i 2009.
Stationen Eschwege og den tilknyttede strækning blev den 31. oktober 1875 åbnet sammen med strækningen Bebra – Eschwege Vest af jernbanelinjen Göttingen–Bebra som en stikbane. Dengang var bygningen af jernbanelinjen Leinefelde–Treysa, en delstrækning af kanonbanen, allerede planlagt. Dens strækning mellem stationen Eschwege og Leinefelde blev åbnet den 15. maj 1880. Stationen Eschwege blev dermed omdannet fra endestation til gennemgåendestation.
