Schellenberger-tårnet har siden 1193/94 i det nuværende Marktschellenberg været anvendt som vagttårn til grænsefæstning af det stadig mere selvstændige Berchtesgadener Land samt efter sekulariseringen indtil 1823 til stationering af en kongelig bayersk grænsebesætning.
