Den fra 1616 etablerede Hortus Palatinus var haven til Heidelbergs slot, en af de mest betydningsfulde renæssancehaver i Tyskland. Den blev anset for at være en af de berømteste haver i Europa i sin tid.
Bestilleren af Hortus Palatinus var kurfyrst Friedrich V., som dermed påvirkede slotts militære kapacitet. Denne terrasshave blev påbegyndt i 1616 af den franske ingeniør og havearkitekt Salomon de Caus, der var blevet hentet fra England, og som også var en af de største fysikere i sin tid, men blev aldrig færdiggjort på grund af de krigslignende uroligheder i de efterfølgende år. Haven erstattede den såkaldte Hasengärtlein, den sene middelalderlige slotsgård. Da Friedrich blev valgt til konge af Böhmen og flyttede sin residens til Prag, blev arbejdet med Hortus Palatinus indstillet.
