Slaget ved Mainz fandt sted den 31. december 406 mellem de Ripuariske franskmænd og en alliance dannet af de germanske folk af vandalere, suebere og alaner. Frankerne led et nederlag, og sejrherrerne kunne uden videre modstand trænge ind i det romerske rige.
Som følge af ankomsten af hunnerne havde vandalere, suebere og alaner forladt deres bopælsområder og vandrede rundt i Germaniens område, som er nord for Donau og øst for Rhinen. I Sydtyskland mødte de hinanden og samlede sig. De besluttede at trænge ind i det romerske rige, hvor den romerske grænsehæren allerede havde været fraværende i fem år.
