Kirken ligger ca. fem kilometer syd for Betzenstein og ligger i en højde af 529 m over havets overflade.
Den oprindelige betegnelse for Riegelstein var Raupersdorf. Hans I. Türrigel initierede opførelsen af borgen Riegelstein. Hans sønner kaldte sig i 1403 for første gang „Tyrrigel zum Riegelstein“, også Türriegel eller Dürriegel. Derved fik landsbyen navnet: „Riegelstein“. Türriegelne var ministeriale af Schenkerne fra Reicheneck og frigav sig fra Schenkerne med en omfattende ejendom omkring Riegelstein. Fra 1403 var de allodiale. Omkring år 1500 var Heinrich VI. ikke kun turneringsriddere i Ingolstadt, Bamberg og Würzburg, men var også professionelt plejer på borgene Stierberg og Betzenstein.
