Kirken ligger i den østlige del af Unteren Illertal cirka 2,5 km syd for Illertissen på en højde af 519 m over havets overflade. Mod øst stiger terrænet gradvist op mod Oberroggenburger Skov. To kilometer mod vest løber grænsen til Baden-Württemberg.
Området var allerede i mesolitikum beboet af mennesker, som enkelte fund viser. Cirka en kilometer syd for byen lå en udendørs station, som er beskyttet som kulturarv med aktenummer D-7-7826-0030.
