Det er en underpræfektur i departementet og ligger ved floden Meurthe ved dens sammenløb med Vezouze.
Lunéville var et anerkendt feriested i det 18. århundrede, kendt som hovedstaden i Lorraine. Det store Château de Lunéville, bygget i 1702 for Leopold, hertug af Lorraine for at erstatte et ældre palads, var residens for hertugen af Lorraine, indtil hertugdømmet blev annekteret af Frankrig i 1766. Slottet blev designet i stilen af Versailles for at tilfredsstille Leopolds kone, Élisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans, niece til Ludvig XIV, og blev kendt som "Versailles i Lorraine". Det inkluderer et kapel designet af Germain Boffrand. Leopold og hans kone var forældre til prins Charles Alexander af Lorraine og Francis I, den hellige romerske kejser.
