Denne kommune blev tidligere kaldt Pléhérel. Mellem 1972 og 2004 blev kommunen Plévenon slået sammen med Pléhérel, og kombinationen af de to fik navnet Fréhel, der er udledt af navnet Cap Fréhel, hvor begge kommuner var beliggende. I 2004 blev Plévenon imidlertid igen en selvstændig kommune, mens Pléhérel beholdt navnet på kommunen Fréhel.
