Navnet Holywell refererer bogstaveligt til hellig + kilde i forbindelse med St Winefrides kilde, som ligger i byen. På samme måde er dets walisisk navn, Treffynnon, en sammensætning af tre "by" + ffynnon "kilde", som betyder "by af [kilden]".
