Byen Buttermere ligger mellem søerne Buttermere og Crummock Water i Lake District og er overhængt af toppe som Grasmoor mod nord og High Stile mod syd. De nærmeste byer er Keswick og Cockermouth, som begge ligger cirka 10 miles væk.
Buttermere kirke er helliget St. James og stammer fra 1840, hvor den erstattede et kapel, som var helliget i 1507. Den har en mindeplade til Alfred Wainwright i vindueskarmen med udsigt over Haystacks, hvor hans aske blev spredt. Den er klassificeret som grade II.
