I sin vidunderlige bog "Geografi af Genius" siger Eric Weiner, at Firenze var et sted for Genius under renæssancen. Men det var ganske særligt eller som han siger: "Byen var sumpet, malarial og udsat for regelmæssige udbrud af brand, oversvømmelse og den bølgende pest. Den har ikke nogen havn og var omgivet af onde, lejlighedsvis krigeriske naboer. Nogle af disse andre by-stater var større eller som Milano, militært stærkere. Alligevel skinnede renæssancen lysest ikke i disse steder, men i Firenze."
