I den sydlige del af kommunen ligger kirkebyen Beckum. Derudover hører bydelene Woolde og Oele under kommunen. Kommunen Hengelo samarbejder i Region Twente. Hengelo er, efter Enschede, Zwolle og Deventer, den fjerde største by i Overijssel.
