Surhuizum ligger nordøst for Drachten, ved N358 mellem landsbyerne Surhuisterveen og Augustinusga. Landsbyen havde i 2021 1.275 indbyggere. Under Surhuizum falder også de steder Buwetille, Kortwoude, Ophuis, Surhuizumer Mieden og Vierhuizen. Landsbyen er oprindeligt en landsby, en som var stærkt landbrugspræget, hvilket er tydeligt at se på de til tider storslåede gårde, der står på begge sider af hovedgaden. Stednavnet henviser sandsynligvis til, at det er opstået fra et nordligt beliggende område, og at dette var de sydlige huse.
