Byen ligger i den sydlige del af kommunen ved kanten af natur- og vandsportsområdet Nationalparken De Alde Feanen, mellem Leeuwarden og Drachten. Der er færgeforbindelser til Wartena og De Veenhoop. Byen havde i 2021 400 indbyggere. Siden 1989 har det officielle navn været Earnewâld. Siden 1980 har storkebyen It Eibertshiem ligget ved byen.
