Det ligger ved Groningerstraatweg fra Leeuwarden til Groningen og langs jernbanelinjen Groningen - Leeuwarden. Ved station Hurdegaryp stopper lokalbanetogene to gange i timen i begge retninger. Navnet Hardegarijp kunne ifølge Encyclopedien over Friesland betyde: den hårde egn på en smal landstræk. Det friesiske ord for egn er nemlig gea, og en smal landstræk er på latin en ripa, eller på fransk en rive. Denne landstræk befandt sig på den nuværende Zomerweg syd for den nuværende landsby. Zomerweg var en del af forbindelsesvejen mellem Leeuwarden og Groningen.
