Byen Veenoord ligger lige op fladen af Nieuw-Amsterdam - faktisk er det ét hele, Nieuw-Amsterdam - Veenoord. At en del har et andet navn skyldes, at det før den kommunale sammenlægning af Drenthe lå i en anden kommune, nemlig Sleen. Nieuw-Amsterdam - Veenoord bliver også kaldt Tvillingeby. Siden den kommunale sammenlægning den 1. januar 1998 hører begge landsbyer under kommunen Emmen.
