Kirken er bygget til den protestantiske gudstjeneste og blev designet af Jacob van Campen. Bygningen blev muliggjort med støtte fra Prins Frederik. I 1641 blev bygningen færdig. Restaurering var nødvendig i 1859, og i 1910 brændte kirken helt ned. Der blev foretaget genopbygning i ændret form. I 1951 blev skaderne fra Anden Verdenskrig genoprettet under en restaurering.
