På stedet for mindekapellet stod der fra midten af det 12. århundrede prioratet Hooidonk. Dette er et af de første klostre i Nord-Brabant. I 1146 gav abbeden fra det limburgiske augustinerkloster Rolduc tilladelse til grundlæggelsen af prioratet Hooidonk, på en naturlig ø i Dommel ved Nederwetten. Oprindeligt var det et dobbeltkloster, altså for mænd og kvinder. Men fra 1242 boede der kun kvindelige religiøse af adelig afstamning. Prioratet blev kendt for miraklet i Hooidonk.
