Den første fuldskala osmanniske belejring af Konstantinopel fandt sted i 1422 som følge af den byzantinske kejser Manuel II's forsøg på at blande sig i arvefølgen af osmanniske sultaner, efter Mehmed I's død i 1421. Denne politik fra Byzantinerne blev ofte brugt med succes til at svække deres naboer.
Da Murad II fremstod som den sejrende efterfølger til sin far, marcherede han ind i byzantinsk territorium. Tyrkerne havde for første gang anskaffet sig deres egne kanoner ved belejringen i 1422, ”falkene”, som var korte, men brede kanoner. De to sider var teknologisk jævnbyrdige, og tyrkerne måtte bygge barrikader ”for at modtage… stenene fra bombardementerne.”
