Den 18. april 1775 begyndte den britiske hær sin bevægelse over Charles River mod Lexington. Den britiske hær havde været stationeret i Boston siden havnene blev lukket i kølvandet på Boston Tea Party. Hæren blev konstant overvåget af Revere og andre patrioter. Klokken cirka 23 blev Revere sendt af Dr. Warren over Charles River til Charlestown, på den modsatte bred, hvor han kunne begynde sin rytterfærd mod Lexington.
