Das Adriatische Meer, kurz auch die Adria, ist das lang gestreckte nördliche Seitenbecken des Mittelmeeres zwischen der Apenninhalbinsel und Balkanhalbinsel. Es ist nach der Stadt Adria in Italien benannt. Zum Adriatischen Meer wird alles gerechnet, was nördlich der Straße von Otranto liegt.
Das Adriatische Meer ist von Nordwest bis Südost 820 Kilometer lang und durchschnittlich 160 km breit. Die größte Breite beträgt etwa 220 Kilometer. Es bedeckt eine Fläche von 132.000 Quadratkilometern und ist im Nordbecken zwischen 40 und 200 Meter tief. Der südliche Teil ist bedeutend tiefer und erreicht zwischen Durrës und Bari mit 1260 Metern seine größte Tiefe. Den südlichen Abschluss des Meeres bildet die Straße von Otranto, wo der Abstand zwischen Italien und Albanien 71 Kilometer beträgt.
