Die Gemeinde liegt im Tal des Marzer Bachs in einer etwa 20 km breiten Mulde der Wulkaebene. Sie ist umgeben von niedrigen, zum Teil bewaldeten Hügeln. Einzige Ortschaft der Gemeinde ist Marz, allerdings gibt es noch die Einzellagen Heroldsmühle, Holzstadel und Villa Waldfried.Vor Christi Geburt war das Gebiet Teil des keltischen Königreiches Noricum und gehörte zur Umgebung der keltischen Höhensiedlung Burg auf dem Schwarzenbacher Burgberg. Später unter den Römern lag das heutige Marz dann in der Provinz Pannonia.
