Fohnsdorf ist eine im Bezirk Murtal gelegene Gemeinde des österreichischen Bundeslandes Steiermark mit 7558 Einwohnern . Die Gemeinde gehört zum Gerichtsbezirk Judenburg und liegt an der Nordgrenze des Aichfelds. Fohnsdorf besteht aus acht Katastralgemeinden und zehn Zählsprengeln. 1114 wurde der Ort erstmals als „Fanestorf“ urkundlich erwähnt und später durch den Braunkohlebergbau bekannt, der Wodzicki-Schacht war mit Stollen bis zu einer Tiefe von knapp 1200 Meter der tiefste Braunkohlebergbau der Welt.
