Die Zeit des Kolonialismus begann für Frankreich mit dem Erwerb der ersten Kolonien am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde Frankreich zur zweitgrößten Kolonialmacht der Welt. Nach 1945 zerfiel das französische Kolonialreich rasch. Der Auflösungsprozess beschleunigte sich in den 1950er Jahren. Allein im „Afrikanischen Jahr“ 1960 wurden 14 französische Kolonien unabhängig.
